How To Make Your House Decorations Pop This Christmas

With the festive period just around the corner for us, many people are looking to add a little bit of joy and festivities back into their lives this year after a rather gloomy 2020. It’s uncertain what the rest of the year has in store for us, all around the world people are living in uncertainty but one thing is for sure, Christmas always brings a little bit of magic regardless of circumstances and can help people connect and come together like no other time of the year. In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the ways you can get your house Christmas ready and make it extra special this year.

You don’t need to be a DIY extraordinaire to make your house Christmas ready and you don’t need to go over the top plastering your home with garish Christmas lights and decorations to make it feel festive. In this article, we are going to look at some of the subtle ways you can make your home more festive and really enhance that family, homely feel we all long to associate with Christmas.

Make It Cosy

Arguably one of the best or worst (depending on the kind of person you are) things about the festive period is the weather getting colder, a little bit frosty, and if you’re lucky snowy. With the colder weather, you will no doubt find your gas and electricity bill creeps up as you take more efforts to keep your home warm. One of the best ways to keep your house warm and cosy is by changing your furniture around and adding a few new items to your home. We highly recommend:

  • Throws and Blankets
  • Candles
  • A Real or Electric Fireplace (often cheaper than gas central heating!)
  • A large supply of Hot Chocolate

Pick The Right Christmas Tree

We all know that one of the most iconic and uplifting things about Christmas is setting up the Christmas tree and decorating it with family and friends. Planning out the spot for your Christmas tree for some people is an all year round job and getting the right tree to fill that spot is equally important. The ultimate decision comes down to real vs artificial and people get very defensive about their choices, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each:

Real Tree:

Pros Cons
Fresh Winter Smell Leaves Pine Needles Everywhere
Iconic Genuine Christmas Tree Look Only Lasts One Christmas
Fully Unique – No Two The Same Requires Maintenance
Can Remain Planted For Future Years Heavier and harder to set up (require stand)

Aritficial Tree:

Pros Cons
Cheap Low-Cost Trees Can Look Low Quality
Good For Those With Allergies Have To Store All Year Round
Saves a Real Tree Doesn’t Smell Like a Tree
Use Every year Doesn’t Have a Natural Feel
No Mess From Pine Needles Falling Not a Unique Looking Tree

Ultimately the pros and cons list could go on and on but we believe this decision purely comes down to personal choice. If you do decide to go down the path of an artificial tree then using a service like our Self Storage Blackpool facility which can be a fantastic low-cost way to store your tree and decorations all year round.

Decorations in Moderation

We are firm believers in all things in moderation, for this reason, we highly recommend that you take the same approach with your Christmas decorations to create that perfect homely feel for your festive season. That’s not to say that a house plastered from head to toe in some breathtakingly amazing Christmas lights can’t look good, but it can also be super expensive on your electricity bill, we recommend some of the following:

  • A Nice Tree – See point #2 on this post for more information on this
  • Natural Lights – Blue, White and Gold Christmas lights can give a nice natural feel to your Christmas decorations
  • Wooden Logs and Wool – Using these as decoration can help give a nice rustic feel to your Christmas decorations
  • Soft colours – Use dark reds and greens to help create a relaxing aesthetic for the interior of your home during Christmas

Pick a Theme

Pick a theme and stick with it, consistency is key for creating the perfect Christmas look and feel for your home. We recommend that you pick a theme for your home at Christmas time and stick with that theme throughout your house. We recommend you do this by doing the following:

  • Pick a colour scheme: Choose a colour scheme that works for your home then use that throughout the house, you can use this on bedding, cushion covers, table dressings, your Christmas tree and much more. A personal favourite for ourselves is a traditional festive tartan and dark warm colours.
  • Decorations: Try to stick to one or two types of decorations. If you have Christmas lights outside your house try to ensure they are all of a similar theme and style so they don’t contrast with each other.
  • Props and interior Decorations: Create a theme for your interior decorations, you may want to go with a traditional nativity style set up, for example, make this the centrepiece of your decorations and style your home around it. Similarly, you may want a crafty feel to your Christmas, try to make your decorations all fall in line with this rather than mixing shop-bought decorations with arts and crafts style decorations.

Finally most importantly, people!

What is Christmas without the people you love around you? In the current climate, it’s yet unknown what restrictions will be in place over the festive period but one thing is for sure the people you spend Christmas with this year will be more important than ever. Christmas is a time to hit pause on all the craziness of the world and enjoy some quality company, food and laughter with friends and family so if you do nothing else on this list please ensure that you surround yourself with good company this year. Some activities we suggest include:

  • Family Board Games
  • Christmas Day Television
  • Christmas Dinner (of course!)
  • A Family Walk
  • The sharing of Gifts
